What is a Magazine?

What is a magazine?

Part 2 of my editorial on defining a magazine, this time it's purely digital

It’s been less than a year, but it seems like a lifetime ago when I was a print editor. And admittedly even as much as I used the internet as an integral part of my job, my thoughts and philosophy were print-based. That is not to say that I underestimated the power of web-based content producers, in fact I often admired the potential of such operations in how nimble they could afford to be in getting up-to-the-minute information to readers/viewers. When my current position was created it signified a huge stride towards closing that gap, and we are in the midst of even greater transition.

Back when I was a print editor I did an editorial on the definition of a magazine (March ’13). Now at the time I thought I had been perfectly clear, but I know this was still misconstrued to be some sort of attack on websites, which couldn’t be further from the truth. My point was that a website is not a magazine. Period, end of story. And why would you want to be? The term magazine is very limiting, and almost passé at this point. I can’t remember the last time I felt the need to insert the word after GM High-Tech Performance. For one thing, the name is already a mouthful. But it also neglects all of our digital efforts.

As we enter a new era at GMHTP, it is my hope that we can step up our efforts to literally be everywhere. And just how do we do that?  With a lot of help! Rick and myself can’t do it all. That’s for sure. If you’ve got tips we want to hear ‘em! Email or to give us a hand.
