Basic facts on one of the baddest manual transmissions on the market

T56

Debuting in the 1993 Firebird Formula/Trans Am and Camaro Z28, the T56 quickly became known as one tough 6-speed. It wasn’t until 1997 that the Corvette adopted this trans, on its fifth-generation model (C5), which continued throughout the life of the chassis and on into the C6. It also became the go-to manual transmission for an LS based engine application. All factory GM T56 transmissions have a 26-spline input and 27-spline output shaft except for the M10, which has a 32-spline output for the SSR's added weight. Most T56s, such as the F-body version, were rated at 450 lb-ft of torque. Among its lifespan there existed several versions, which had subtle differences including gear ratios.

Forward gear ratios

LT1 F-body (M28): 3.36, 2.07, 1.35, 1.00, .80, .62

LT1 (M29): 2.97, 2.07, 1.43, 1.00, .80, .62

LT1/LS1 (MN6): 2.66, 1.78, 1.30, 1.00, .74, .50

C5/C6 (MN6): 2.66, 1.78, 1.30, 1.00, .74, .50

C6 Z51 (MZ6): 2.97, 2.07, 1.43, 1.00, .74, .50

GTO/CTS-V/C5 Z06 (M12): 2.97, 2.07, 1.43, 1.00, .84, .56

SSR (M10): 3.01, 2.07, 1.43, 1.00, .84, .57

TR6060

Starting with the 2008 Corvette and G8 GXP, the TR6060 replaced the T56 on the Gen IV engine. It was later employed on the 2009 CTS-V and 2010 Camaro SS, as well as the 2009 Corvette ZR1 and 2012 Camaro ZL1, where it received some of its most challenging duty. All factory GM TR6060 transmissions feature a straight 26–spline input and 31-spline output shaft, which helps give them a conservatively rated 700 lb-ft torque capacity. Here is a list of several different versions available with their respective gear ratios. Other differences exist internally to handle more or less power for various applications.

Camaro SS/G8 GXP (M10): 3.01, 2.07, 1.43, 1.00, .84, .57

ZL1/CTS-V (MG9): 2.66, 1.78, 1.30, 1.00, .80, .63

Base Corvette/Z06 (MM6): 2.66, 1.78, 1.30, 1.00, .74, .50

GS (MZ6): 2.97, 2.07, 1.43, 1.00, .71, .57

ZR1 (MH3): 2.29, 1.61, 1.21, 1.00, .82, .68
