We've got a 2011 Chevy Cruze on loan from GM for the week, more on that soon, which started a debate at lunch. It turns out the base Cruze's 1.8L Ecotec makes 138 horsepower (not bad), but so does the 1.4L turbocharged engine. Granted it is a smaller engine, but it seems a little fishy - even more so considering it supposedly makes it at a very low 4900rpm, meanwhile torque hits 148 ft-lbs (23 more than the base 1.8L). I'd like the 2.0L direct inject turbocharged Ecotec back, but if the 1.4L makes it to 40 mpg's I will be sufficiently impressed.
